Cong leader targets Lata Mangeshkar, wants Padma award revoked

In a statement that has ignited a war of words in Maharashtra, the Mumbai Congress unit's chief has said that artists who have received Padma awards from the Centre should refrain from supporting any political leader.

Speaking at a rally Janardan Chandurkar said that artists should not not use their mass appeal to support leaders and "those who are accused of communal violence" in particular.

"Some artists have exhibited support to such leaders. They should first give up their Padma awards or else the government should strip them of their Padma awards. They should not be biased and if they want to really support certain politicians they should enter politics. If some of these artists make such public comments again, we will launch an agitation against them on the roads,"Chandukar was quoted as saying.

Although he didn't name her, Chandurkar's target is thought to be Lata Mangeshkar

The Congress leader stayed away from naming any particular artist or leader but his target is being seen as singer Lata Mangeshkar for her endorsement of the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

Mangeshkar, who has been awarded the Bharat Ratna, had at a recent speech in Pune endorsed the prime ministerial post for Modi.

"Narendrabhai is like my brother. All of us want to see him become the Prime Minister. On the auspicious occasion of Diwali, I hope our wishes would come true," she had said.

While the singer hasn't responded to his statement, other political parties have jumped in the fray and questioned why Chandurkar has targeted the legendary singer for having a political view.

"Do Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi endorse this demand? If Chandurkar's demand is genuine, then why is the Congress asking Sachin Tendulkar to campaign for their party. This shows the Congress's double standards," state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis was quoted as telling NDTV.

The Shiv Sena has also jumped on board to criticise the demand.

"These awards are not the property of Chandurkar’s grandfather... The government had given the Bharat Ratna and other prestigious awards to Lataji in recognition of her immense contribution to the world of music. One does not become a slave of the government just because it gave an award to a person," Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut was quoted as saying in a Zee News report.
