'Cholo Paltai', chants Narendra Modi in Tripura's Sonamura: PM asks voters to overthrow Manik Sarkar govt, adopt 'HIRA' BJP

In his first political rally in Tripura since 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mocked the current CPM government by calling the chief minister ‘purana manik’ (referring to him as an old gem) and asked them to adopt ‘HIRA’ (diamond) Bharatiya Janata Party. Modi was addressing a gathering in Sipahijala district’s Sonamura subdivision.

The prime minister will address another rally in Unakoti district’s Kailashahar. Slamming the current Manik Sarkar government, Modi said that Tripura should achieve “new heights of glory” just like the rest of the country. “People here aspire for more and better employment opportunities,” the prime minister told the gathering.

Modi arrived in Agartala at around 11 on Thursday morning and he is expected to leave for New Delhi at 4.15 this evening. “We are expecting a good percentage of tribal voters in the rallies. We will be welcoming Modi in the traditional way. This is Modi’s first political rally in Tripura for the Assembly polls. In 2013, BJP’s star campaigner was Rajnath Singh. This time, all political heavyweights are campaigning in the state, which is a big thing for us,” News18 quoted BJP spokesperson Mrinal Kanti Deb as saying. Setting the agenda for the Assembly election in Tripura, which have been scheduled for 18 February , Modi said that the government in Tripura has established an atmosphere of fear among the people who speak against them. “BJP will change that.” Raising slogan of cholo paltai (let’s change), Modi brought up scams like the Rose Valley. “Poor of Tripura were looted through the Rose Valley chit fund scam. More than 14 lakh people, half of Tripura’s population lost their hard-earned money. Everyone guilty for stealing from the poor will be punished. Voters will teach them a lesson,” Modi added. “Through the UDAN scheme, we are promoting air connectivity in the North East and Tripura will immensely benefit from the move,” Modi said. “We promise BJP will provide minimum wages to all workers after forming the government in Tripura. BJP promises that whatever the people of rest of the country get, the people of Tripura will also get. BJP will get 7th Pay Commission to Tripura, BJP will increase the minimum wages under MNREGA to the national standard,” he added and slammed the CPM government for ruling the state for over two decades and not getting the minimum wages. “Why have the recommendations of 7th Pay Commission not been implemented in Tripura,” the prime minister asked.

Mocking the current Manik Sarkar government, Modi said it is time you shun old manik. “Tripura needs hira (diamond)” and in his typical style of assigning acronyms said, “H matlab Highway, I matlab I way(digital connectivity) ,R matlab Roadway, A matlab Airway.”

Chanting cholo paltai with the crowd, Modi concluded his speech and said, “We (BJP) are a party that believes in the mantra of ‘Vikas.’ Our aim is ‘Transformation by Transportation,” and ended his address by saying Bharat Mata ki Jai and ‘Cholo Paltai’ (Lets Change). The India-Bangladesh border adjoining Sipahijala and Unakoti districts has been sealed in view of Modi’s visit, the police said.Giving details of Modi’s itinerary, he said the prime minister is scheduled to arrive at Agartala airport in a chartered plane, and from there, he would fly to Sonamura of Sipahijala district in an IAF helicopter. A public rally has been organised at Rangamati Madrassa school ground in Sipahijala, Bhattacharya said. According to Sipahijala SP Sudipta Das, the BSF has been asked to seal the frontier as the place is not very far from the international border. “A security blanket has been thrown around the district with central and state paramilitary forces deployed at strategic points,” Das said. After the rally at Siphijala, Modi would go to Kailashahar in Unakoti district, Bhattacharya said, adding the prime minister would address a public meet at Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya stadium in the second half of the day. The security forces have been asked to intensify patrolling in the district and adequate measures have been taken to thwart untoward incidents, Unakoti SP Ajit Pratap Singh said.
