Chhattisgarh polls: Amit Jogi embarrasses Congress

Congress leader Amit Jogi, who will contest from Marwahi constituency in the forthcoming Assembly polls, managed to embarrass his party after it was detected that he misrepresented facts about himself many times by possessing documents showing multiple dates and places of birth.

“Whether I was born in 1977 or 1978 it’s really not an issue in the elections,” Amit, the son of Chhattisgarh’s first chief minister Ajit Jogi told CNN-IBN.

On 15 December 2001, when the junior Jogi applied for registration as a citizen of india he mentioned that he was born on 7 August 1977 in Dallas, Texas, USA.

A year later in August 2002, Amit applied for a Chhattisgarh domicile certificate where he claimed he was born on 7 August 1978 at Pendra village in Bilaspur. Soon after he applied for the certificate, the Raipur collector issued a certificate saying that his place of birth is Chhattisgarh.

Jumping on to the opportunity offered on a platter by the anomalies in the personal information of Amit Jogi, the Bharatiya Janata Party wasted little time to take on the Congress.

“Dubious credentials are more than one. May be the Congress looks for these credentials in their candidates,” BJP spokesperson Meenakshi Lekhi told CNN-IBN.

Caught off-guard, the Congress hardly has any defence to offer.

“We do not know the truth is this regard. But I can assure you that we will find out the truth,” said Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi.

Chhattisgarh votes in two phases on 11 and 19 November and the counting of votes is scheduled on 8 December.
