BJP to file dissent note on JPC report on 2G scam

New Delhi: BJP today said it will file a dissent note on the JPC report on 2G scam while alleging that the panel chairman P C Chacko had “bull-dozed” its adoption. The opposition party also attacked Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for remaining quiet when his party leader while chairing the JPC had “thrown all norms to the winds” to ensure adoption of the report. “The way JPC report was bulldozed. Rahul Gandhi did not speak anything on this,” said BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad, adding that, “All norms were thrown to the winds by JPC Chairman and Rahul Gandhi still keeps quiet.” Targeting former ally JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav, BJP’s deputy leader in Rajya Sabha questioned his absence at the last meeting of the JPC when its report was to be adopted. With the support of outside allies BSP and SP and absence of JD(U) members, Government yesterday managed to have its way in the JPC on 2G scam when the panel approved the draft report giving clean chit to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram with a 16-11 vote in its favour. Eleven opposition members, including BJP’s 5 and one each of BJD, TMC, CPI, CPI(M), AIADMK and DMK voted against the Joint Parliamentary Committee report that accused former Telecom Minister A Raja of “misleading” the Prime Minister and “belying” the assurances given to him. Of the total 30 members in the committee, three members, including Gopinath Munde from BJP, and Sharad Yadav and Ramchandra Prasad Singh - both JD (U) - were absent. Out of the 27 present, the ruling side got the votes of Congress (11), NCP (one), BSP (2), SP (1) and Nominated member from Rajya Sabha Ashok Ganguly. Chacko also voted as a Congress member. BJP leader and member of the committee Yashwant Sinha had alleged that a contrived majority has been “unashamedly” used to adopt a report based on “wrong facts, falsehood and prejudicial” findings without the consideration of the Committee. Members who wish to give dissent notes on the report, which rubbished the loss figure of Rs 1.76 lakh crore estimated by CAG and termed it as “ill conceived”, have been given time till October 10. Chacko had said after going through the dissent notes, he will submit the report to Speaker Meira Kumar by October end as Parliament will not be in session then. The report will be tabled in the Winter session of Parliament. PTI
