Assembly session at Ramlila maidan: Cong, BJP oppose move

Having held the swearing in of the new chief minister and his council of ministers in Ramlila grounds, the Aam Aadmi Party government in Delhi now wants to organise a session of the legislative assembly in the grounds. The government wants to hold the session in January-end or February to pass Delhi’s own Jan Lokpal Bill. The proposition was immediately met with opposition from the Congress as well as the BJP. PTI[/caption] “This is not a meeting of their party that they can hold it anywhere. It will be a sheer waste of money too,” the BJP’s Harsh Vardhan, leader of the opposition in the Delhi Assembly, was quoted as saying in The Hindustan Times. Delhi Congress leader Arvinder Singh also said it would be a waste of public funds. Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the attempt of the government was to build a relationship with the people of Delhi and to reduce the gap between the governed and the elected representatives. Kejriwal has already promised that the Jan Lokpal Bill will be tabled in the Assembly by the first week of February. In its election manifesto, the Aam Aadmi Party had promised passage of the anti-graft bill on December 29 at a special session of the Assembly from the Ramlila Ground if it is voted to power. Soon after winning the confidence vote in the Delhi Assembly, Kejriwal had termed the passage of the Jan Lokpal Bill as the “most important issue” on the agenda of his government.
