Assam Assembly polls 2016: Women voters registered higher polling percentage than men in first phase of election

Women voters registered a higher polling percentage than men in the first phase of elections for 65 assembly constituencies in Assam on Monday.

Guwahati: Women voters registered a higher polling percentage than men in the first phase of elections for 65 assembly constituencies in Assam on Monday. Data released by Election Office in Guwahati said the voting percentage of women was 82.58 while that of men was 81.84. The total vote polled in the first phase on Monday was 78,24,830 out of a total electorate of 95,19,076 registering a poll percentage of 82.20, it said. In the last assembly polls, 77.02 percent male voted as against 75 percent of women. [caption id=“attachment_2714266” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]Representational image. PTI[/caption] The highest total poll percentage of 88.07 was recorded in Naoboicha constituency in Lakhimpur district while the lowest of 75.05 percent was at Silchar in Cachar. Altogether 37,98,462 women out of 45,99,635 exercised their franchise registering a voter percentage of 82.58 as against 40,26,298 male casting their vote out of a total electorate of 49,19,432 with a poll percentage of 81.84. Women registered a higher poll percent than male in 35 of the 65 constituencies, while in more than ten the figures were almost equal. Women also recorded a higher turnout in constituencies of chief ministerial candidate of both the Congress and BJP. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi’s Titabor constituency recorded a higher turnout of 84.11 percent as against 82.16 male voters while in Majuli (ST), from where BJP chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal is contesting, women recorded a higher turnout of 84.70 percent as against 82.10 percent of men voters. Polling per centage of women was also higher than men in nine of the 13 districts where voting was held yesterday in the constituencies under it. These include Karimganj, Karbi Anglong, Udalguri, Sonitpur, Golaghat,Jorhat, Sibsagar, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji, according to the EC data. In Karimganj district, where the total vote polled in the five constituencies was 78.17 percent, polling by women was 78.55 percent as against 77.83 percent by men, the EC data said. In the four constituencies of Karbi Anglong, total vote polled was 81.54 percent with women voters percentage at 82.13 against 80.98 by men. Three constituencies of Udalguri recorded a total vote of 82.55 percent with women polling 83.18 percent as against 81.94 by men, it said. Eight constituencies in Sonitpur district recorded 84.20 percent and 85.19 percent women cast their votes as against 83.27 percent men. In four constituencies of Golaghat district, 84.24 percent of votes were polled with 84.6 percent women casted their votes as against 83.9 per cent of men. In Jorhat district, where polls were held in six constituencies, the total vote polled is 82.25 percent with 82.9 percent women exercising their franchise as against 81.61 percent of men voters. In Sibsagar district’s six constituencies the total votes polled was 84.67 percent. 86.31 women cast their votes as against 84.31 percent by men. In the four assembly constituencies of Lakhimpur, the total vote polled was 85.23 percent with 86.31 percent women voters exercising their franchise as against 84.21 percent of men. AssamIn the two constituencies of Dhemaji district, the polling percentage was 81.29 with 83.24 percent women voting as against 79.45 percent men. In the seven constituencies of Dibrugarh, where 83.81 percent of polling was recorded, and in five constituencies of Tinusukia, which recorded 81.45 percent polling, the percentage of votes polled was almost at par. Cachar district, where the highest number of 15 constituencies went to the polls, 79.24 percent voting was recorded, while in Dima Hasao where election was held in one constituency, 81.67 percent votes were cast. In these two districts male turnout was higher than women.
