Earlier this year, the RSS-backed Shiksha Bachao Aandolan which had led the petition against the book, had claimed that Rupa Publications (publishing partner of Aleph) had agreed to withdraw the book.

Singh had then denied the claim, only to have a statement issued by the company days later that the book would remain out of stock until it is reviewed by independent scholars.

While resigning, according to the report, Singh has also questioned Rupa's decision to to publish a translation of poems by Modi during the election campaign.

The report said, Sources confirmed that Singh was “uncomfortable” with the way the publishing house was proceeding with the Doniger controversy and felt that it would eventually move in a direction where he would have no say at all.
