The only explanation from the DMK about the suspension of MK Alagiri, the elder son of M Karunanidhi, from the party has been that he was indulging in anti-party activities but the party chief has now revealed that the MP threatened his younger brother with death. “Alagiri came to my house on 24 January and complained regarding Stalin and troubled me and used harsh words. Alagiri told me Stalin will die in three months. No father can tolerate such words against his son,” Karunanidhi was quoted as saying by CNN-IBN. “I do not know why Alagiri has nurtured such hatred against Stalin for many years,” the DMK chief said. PTI[/caption] “Alagiri should have met me in person and spoken about any issues he had about his suspension. But he has been talking to the media. He is still under temporary suspension, party will take a call on expulsion,” Karunanidhi said. He also said that the party wouldn’t ally with the Congress in the upcoming general elections. Alagiri, a former Union Minister and MP, was suspended from the party on 24 January from primary membership and all posts he held in the party. “Considering that his continuing in the party is not proper, and that it could affect party discipline, Alagiri is being temporarily removed from all party posts including primary membership,” the party had said in a statement. Firstpost had noted that the suspension of the Madurai leader was a non-event and even his return couldn’t be ruled out. Firstpost’s G Pramod Kumar had said: However, one shouldn’t be surprised if Alagiri makes a comeback sooner than later because, after all, he is family. What has unfolded so far is sibling rivalry that is expressing itself as a political fight. The sibling rivalry, under normal circumstances, doesn’t end overnight because the sibling out of favour can always find sympathy from somebody else in the family. With Karunanidhi’s revelation about what resulted in his elder son’s expulsion from the party, however, Alagiri’s return to the party fold any time soon may just have become that bit more unlikely.
