After Uber rape case, AAP tells Rajnath Singh to make cops more accountable

New Delhi: A delegation of Aam Aadmi Party MPs on Wednesday met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and took up the issue of the security of women in Delhi while seeking that police be made more accountable in this regard. The delegation comprising AAP’s parliamentary leader Dharmavira Gandhi, MP Sadhu Singh and senior leader Manish Sisodia also called for the verification of licences of radio cab drivers and deployment of PCR vans for the security of women in the wake of the rape of a woman executive in a cab in the national capital. Reiterating his party’s stand on the need for fixing responsibility to ensure that women’s safety received proper attention, Sisodia said that not only junior officers, action should be also taken against any senior officers for lapses leading to any untoward incident. Till the time heads don’t roll, conditions will not improve. “Senior police officers should also be asked to undertake night patrols. That will ensure that the junior staff are more alert. If any untoward incident takes place, then the officer in-charge should be held responsible,” Sisodia said. The AAP leaders, who presented a memorandum to the Home Minister, further said that, instead of being used to cover MPs and secure the Lutyens’ Zone, PCR vans should be deployed to ensure the safety of women. “We asked the Home Minister as to what the government has done to ensure the security of women in the last few months. “Delhi Police is deploying PCR vans for the security of MPs and the Lutyens’ Zone. Anywhere an MP goes, he is followed by a PCR van. The vans should instead be pressed into service for the safety of women,” Sisodia said. The party demanded that the Delhi transport department should be directed to carry out verification of driving licences and doubtful ones should be handed over to the traffic police. “All private taxi service operators should be immediately served notices by the transport department to supply records of their drivers and get their taxis verified afresh,” the memorandum said. AAP, meanwhile, extended its support to the government saying that if it needs help, the party has an army of volunteers to assist the administration in dealing with the issue of women’s safety. PTI
