Is party stalwart LK Advani upset over the BJP’s over dependence on Narendra Modi as its sole electoral issue for the upcoming national polls? An Economic Times report today says that the party leader was the cause of an awkward moment at the BJP’s central election committee meeting when he said that the Congress’s Rahul Gandhi was right in saying that the BJP was relying purely on one man. A leader said that Modi, who was sitting right next to Advani, kept mum and it was party president Rajnath Singh who broke the silence by bringing the conversation back to the party’s candidate list. AFP[/caption] The party stalwart has reportedly been bringing up the issue of the party leaning too heavily on its prime ministerial candidate’s charisma at various forums. According to Advani, other senior leaders should also participate in the party’s campaign. The BJP’s leaders are expectedly not taking Advani’s objections too seriously and are more worried about its star campaigner being able to make it to every campaign rally that they have planned. Modi has been criss-crossing the country as he ratchets up support and most candidates of the party’s candidates are seeking to capitalise on the prime ministerial candidate’s popularity to boost their own chances. The BJP’s campaign has focussed largely on Modi, his achievement and his promise. Expectedly the Congress has been focussing on him and targeting his on various issues and even his personality, but the latest IBN-Lokniti poll indicate that he remains the most popular choice as the prime ministerial candidate. Party stalwarts like Advani are understandably upset over being completely sidelined this time round, but it’s unlikely to change the BJP’s strategy any time soon. From now until the votes are cast, the BJP is likely to keep pushing the image of its prime ministerial candidate as hard as it can.
