AAP government spreading lies, PM Modi not interfering: Delhi police chief BS Bassi

The war of words between the Delhi police and the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government are showing no signs of abating. In an interview with CNN-IBN, Delhi police commissioner BS Bassi hit out at Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal and said that the AAP government is spreading lies in the national capital. The AAP government has been persistently demanding that the Centre to hand over control of the Delhi police to the state. Earlier this week, Arvind Kejriwal met with BS Bassi but the meeting further underlined the differences between the two. Speaking to CNN-IBN, Bassi said that his job was that of policing and not politics. “We are not indulging into politics. There are certain issues which have to be brought in public eye and that’s what we have done. We have to clarify when wrong information is being given out,” Bassi said without clarifying who was giving out wrong information. [caption id=“attachment_2361098” align=“alignleft” width=“380” class=" “] ![Image courtesy: Screengrab from IBNLive](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/BASSI_SCREENGRAB.jpg) Image courtesy: Screengrab from IBNLive[/caption] After the meeting, which lasted for over one-and-a-half-hour, Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain had said that the police was treating the Anand Parbat case “lightly” and termed its stand “objectionable” while accusing Bassi of stonewalling a number of queries by Kejriwal. Jain, who was present in the meeting, had told reporters that Bassi had given a list of 500 similar cases urging the government to offer Rs 5 lakh each as compensation to families of the victims like it did in the case of the teenaged girl which was rejected by Kejriwal. “Kejriwal asked Bassi to take the list to his boss Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Bassi replied saying the PM is too much pre-occupied with other works and has no time for Delhi Police,” PTI quoted Jain as saying on Monday last noting that Delhi Police should be sensitive and that Bassi must answer the Chief Minister’s queries. Elaborating on the same, Bassi told IBN, “We were not victims and neither the Delhi police is at war with the government. But I can understand the anxiety of any government ruling Delhi. They would want total control of the force but at the same time you have to act within the scheme of the Indian Constitution.” Bassi added that Kejriwal was not using him as a political tool. “I’m sure they are trying to do what is correct but I, as the Commissioner, have to keep the records straight and give out the right information. We are not in competition with any organ of the government,” Bassi added. When asked to clear his stand on CM’s ’thulla’ remark, Bassi said that as policemen, the force has been trained to ignore anything that is not palatable. “And that’s why it does not affect our morale. I would like to tell other officers too to not think too much about it.” Commenting on the advertisement by Arvind Kejriwal, Bassi said that these are attempts by the government to malign leaders. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has never interfered and the advertisements are misleading. It is devoid of merit and it is nothing more than political positioning. The attempt is to spread lies and the attempt is failing miserably. Because people of Delhi know about their police,” Bassi added. When asked why the Delhi police has been proactively acting against AAP leaders and not Union ministers who have similar allegations, Bassi said, “Police force is not into politics and I am governed by the law of land. We had not interfered in Tomar’s bogus degree case till we got a definitive complaint.”
