Sonia Gandhi will shortly chair a meeting of the Congress Party’s central election committee to discuss the list of candidates for the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections. While the agenda for the meeting is focused and narrow, shortly after the meeting we will read about and hear Sonia Gandhi’s view on various issues which were not on the agenda, all attributed to ‘sources’. [caption id=“attachment_85018” align=“alignleft” width=“380” caption=“Sonia Gandhi will chair her first party meeting since undergoing surgery in the US. B Mathur/Reuters”] [/caption] We thought we’d go one step ahead and predict what news channels will say shortly after the meeting ends. • Sonia was upset with the handling of the Anna Hazare fast. She was specifically critical of Home Minister P Chidambaram. • Sonia made it clear that Manish Tewari would no longer be an official spokesperson of the party. • Sonia was concerned about the image of the party in the context of corruption and made it clear that she would not tolerate corruption in the party. • Sonia wanted to know why Kapil Sibal could not manage the Hazare issue without the help of Pranab Mukherjee. • Sonia asked Manmohan Singh to get to the bottom of the cash-for-votes scandal and punish all wrong-doers. • Sonia wanted Chidambaram to present a strategy that would deter terrorist acts in the country. She found the recent attack on the Delhi High Court ‘unacceptable’. • Sonia has rejected many aspiring candidates with criminal backgrounds, sending a message that the Congress is an ‘honest’ party.
