Word design: Exhibition of Indian scripts on traditional crafts

When words speak through craft, the magic it unleashes is spell-binding. The 10-day Akshara-Crafting Indian Scripts exhibition beginning today (October 8) till 18, at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharashtra Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum) has created a new design vocabulary developed through artistic calligraphy in regional scripts, applying them to a variety of traditional craft skills.

The exhibition, conceived and conceptualized in 2009 by Jaya Jaitly, founder-president of the Dastkari Haat Samiti,a not-for-profit national association established in 1986, has travelled from New Delhi to Egypt and was also showcased at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The initiative is to teach the value of literacy to craftspeople.
