National Democratic Alliance's candidate Venkaiah Naidu and Opposition's Gopalkrishna Gandhi filed their nomination for the vice-presidential election on Tuesday, the last day of filing nominations. PTI
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi as well as leaders from BJP allies along with AIADMK and TRS, accompanied Naidu as he filed his papers in the Parliament House. PTI
Naidu's name was proposed and seconded by Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and several top leaders of the NDA. After filing his papers, Naidu thanked the prime minister for his support. PTI
Gandhi was accompanied by former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav and Sitaram Yechuri. PTI
The electoral college for the election consists of 790 MPs of the two Houses of Parliament and the elections for the next Vice-President of India will be held on 7 August and the result will also be declared on the same day. Naidu with the support of approximately 410 members clearly has an upper edge over Gandhi. PTI
