Swaraj on Sunday attended the meeting of fourth joint consultative commission between India and Bangladesh. In the meeting she said the common challenges of terrorism and extremism were discussed. Swaraj also said that restoration of pre-1965 links encompassing road, rail, water and coastal shipping links is being planned to increase connectivity between the two countries.Image courtesy: Twitter @ihcdhaka

After the meeting, the Indian external affairs minister met Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina and apprised her of the productive discussions at the joint consultative commission meeting and the tangible progress made since the prime minister’s visit to India. Swaraj also discussed with Hasina the situation arising out of the influx of displaced persons from Rakhine State in Myanmar and the need for an early and lasting solution to the situation. Swaraj also met former Bangladesh prime minister Khaleda Zia on Sunday and said that India wants to see the upcoming election in Bangladesh to be “participatory and credible”, the main Opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said. Swaraj opened the new chancery complex of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka on Monday on the last day of her Bangladesh visit. Swaraj lit a candle to mark the opening of the huge complex at Dhaka’s Baridhara diplomatic enclave while the high commission was previously operating from a house in Gulshan area of the city.
