Steve Smith rescues Australia after top order collapse on Day 2 of 1st Ashes Test
Australia's hopes rested on Smith to mount a fighting rearguard after the loss of four wickets in a faltering chase after England's first innings of 302 at the Gabba.
Resuming from the overnight score of 196/4, Dawid Malan and Moeen Ali stabilised the England innings with scores of 56 and 38 respectively. AP
However, Dawid Malan's dismissal triggered a clatter of wickets. England stumbled from 246 for four to be all out for 302. AP
Australia's pacers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins each claimed three wickets while spinner Nathan Lyon took two scalps. AP
Australia suffered a now-familiar malfunction at the top of the order. Even David Warner feel cheaply while trying to pull Jake Ball through the leg-side only to see his catch being pouched. AP
Steve Smith then led Australia's rescue mission in Brisbane with a battling unbeaten 64 runs. AP
