Thousands attended the funeral of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Sajid Ahmed Gilkar in Srinagar on Wednesday. Gikar was killed along with two militants in a gunfight with security forces in Budgam on Wednesday morning. Reuters
Gilkar’s last rites and funeral prayers were organised at the Grand Mosque premises for the funeral prayer amid chanting of pro-freedom and anti-India slogans. AP
The locals said that the mourners attempted to offer 'Namaz-e-Janazah' (prayer before burial) at the Jamia Masjid, but were prevented by police which lead to clashes. About half-a-dozen persons were injured after security forces fired teargas canisters and shotgun pellets to break a procession of mourners. AP
Irate crowds took to streets in Srinagar and Budgam districts to protest the killing of the Hizbul militant, who the local police said played a key role in lynching of DSP Ayub Pandith last month. Reuters
Later, the prayer for the slain militant was offered at a nearby stadium. Gilkar was buried at his ancestral graveyard in the locality, the officials said. AP
The clash comes two days after seven Amarnath pilgrims were killed and nineteen others were injured in a terror attack in Anantnag. Reuters
