Over 80 people were killed and several others injured when an explosion took place at the Puttingal Devi temple during a festival at Paravoor in Kollam at around 3 am on Sunday.

At about 9:15 in the morning, police, disaster management teams and fire brigades reached the tragedy site for rescue and relief efforts.

The temple structure has been reduced to rubbles after the explosion. As of 2:30 in the afternoon, the death toll totaled to 110 people. At around 3.30 am, there was a massive explosion followed by tremors which were felt even a kilometre away from the 100-year-old Puttingal Devi temple near Kollam.

The festival honouring the Bhadrakali deity in the Paravoor temple has been going on for almost a century. Bursting fireworks on the last few days of the festival is a local custom. But after complaints from locals alleging fireworks were damaging their houses, permission to burst fire crackers this year was denied. However, the the temple but it went ahead anyway. 80% of the houses nearby were destroyed.
