Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (P-71) INS Vikrant after its launch. The 40,000 tonnes aircraft carrier, designed by the Indian Navy (Directorate General of Naval Design) and built by the Cochin Shipyard, is a part of the warship project of the Ministry of Defence. The ship has a length of 262 metres (869ft) and maximum breath of 62 meters (203ft), and will also have two runways for take-off and an angled deck with arrestor wires for landing. PTI

Built at Cochin Shipyard Limited, the carrier is expected to be the centrepiece of Indian Navy’s power in the coming years and will be equipped with modern weapons systems including long range surface-to-air missiles (LR SAM) and close-in weapons system (CIWS). Associated Press
