Outgoing Vice-President Hamid Ansari was on Thursday accorded a warm farewell by leaders from across the political spectrum, at GMC Balayogi Auditorium at Parliament in New Delhi. PTI
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet colleagues, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, deputy speaker M Thambidurai and vice-president elect Venkaiah Naidu were present for the farewell. PTI
Narendra Modi praised Hamid Ansari by saying that he had done his best to uphold the Constitution. Modi also said that, "From now on you will be free to act, talk and work in accordance with your basic political ideology and instinct." PTI
The outgoing vice-president was presented a scroll by deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha PJ Kurien. Recently, Hamid Ansari had evoked a controversy where he said that "a sense of insecurity was creeping in among Muslims because of the vigilantism and intolerance". PTI
Former prime minister Manmohan Singh also hailed his contribution in the House and said the country keeps on progressing despite challenges largely because of people like him. PTI
Ansari will be succeeded by M Venkaiah Naidu, who will take oath as Country's 13th vice-president on Friday at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Polling 516 votes, Naidu defeated Opposition candidate Gopalkrishna Gandhi who got 244 votes. PTI
