Hordes of people descend for the annual festival to watch six bulls and six steers race through the streets of Navarre region as a part of tradition that has been a part of Spanish culture since the 14th century. AP

However, this festival that attracts more than a million visitors every year, has created a controversy with animal rights activists strongly opposing the closing ritual in which the bulls are killed by a matador after a bull fight. Reuters

The protest launched under the name of ‘San fermin without blood’ is led by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, and the Spanish NGO AnimalNaturalis. They have demanded to end this blood sport. However, the government is yet to take any action to stop the festivities. AP
