A car ploughed into a crowd at a busy intersection in Australia's second-largest city Melbourne on Thursday, injuring at least 19 people. The driver of the car was arrested immediately by the Victoria police. AP
Paramedics rushed to the spot for treating and transporting injured pedestrians to the hospital. As per reports, a pre-school child with a head injury was taken to hospital in a serious condition. AP
Police have identified the arrested driver as an Australian citizen of Afghan descent who had earlier committed minor offenses. The police, however, ruled out any terror connection, so far. AP
The driver also had a history of drug use and is on a mental health plan. The police also confirmed that he is receiving treatment for a mental illness. Reuters
