Modi also held wide-ranging talks with Myanmar’s state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday. The prime minister’s visit to Myanmar comes amid a spike in ethnic violence with Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state. PTI

Modi expressed his concern over “extremist violence” in Myanmar’s Rakhine and “violence against security forces”. He also praised Suu Kyi’s “leadership", but skipped mention of the alleged persecution of Rohingya Muslims. PTI

India and Myanmar are looking at strengthening existing cooperation in areas of security and counter-terrorism, trade and investment, infrastructure and energy, and culture, Modi had said ahead of his visit. PTI
