The 40-year old Siddhi Sai Apartments at Ghatkopar’s Damodar Park area, which caved in on Tuesday, housed around 15 families. Fire engines, a rescue van and total 108 ambulances were rushed to the spot immediately. A total of 60 NDRF jawans along with sniffer dogs were also deployed to carry out rescue operations. Locals alleged that a local Shiv Sena leader, Sunil Shitap was allegedly carrying out construction work at the ground floor of the building, compromising the safety of the structure. Some people also said that Shitap did not obtain the compulsory no objection certificate from the society but residents did not confront him, owing to his political connections.
