A four-storey residential building collapsed in suburban Ghatkopar on Tuesday morning, killing eight people and injuring eight other individuals

A four-storey residential building collapsed in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar suburb on Tuesday morning, killing 17 people and injuring 11 others as rescue operations remain underway. PTI

Earlier 12 casualties were reported, including one infant and seven women. However, rescue workers pulled out five more bodies during overnight search and rescue operations, taking the death toll up to 17. Till now, 28 people have been extricated from the debris. Firstpost/ Sachin Gokhale

The 40-year old Siddhi Sai Apartments at Ghatkopar’s Damodar Park area, which caved in on Tuesday, housed around 15 families. Fire engines, a rescue van and total 108 ambulances were rushed to the spot immediately. Locals alleged that a local Shiv Sena leader, Sunil Shitap was allegedly carrying out construction work at the ground floor of the building, compromising the safety of the structure. Some people also said that Shitap did not obtain the compulsory no objection certificate from the society but residents did not confront him, owing to his political connections.
