Monsoon mayhem is back: Mumbai’s highest-single day rainfall in 5 years wreaks havoc in city
Mumbai has been seeing incessant heavy rainfall since Sunday. Today, the city recorded over 300 mm of rainfall at various places in six hours following which several local train services and flights were suspended. People can be seen wading through the waters as rains batter Mumbai. Several parts of the financial capital reported severe waterlogging, crippling road and rail traffic. Waterlogging was reported from Worli, Buntara Bhavan in Kurla East, King’s Circle area, Dadar and Vidyavihar Railway Station, and other areas. PTI

IMD issued an ‘orange’ alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai for the next 24 hours. A ‘yellow’ alert for heavy rain has been issued for tomorrow. A high tide is also predicted at 1:57 pm today at 4.40m. Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, in a post on X, indicated that all emergency services are on high alert.

The National Disaster Response Force has been deployed to ‘avert’ a flood-like situation in the city. Teams have been deployed in Kurla and Ghatkopar areas of Mumbai and in other parts of Maharashtra, including Thane, Vasai ( Palghar), Mahad (Raigad), Chiplun (Ratnagiri), Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Sindhudurg. Several passengers were left stuck at Dombivli Railway station as local trains were suspended. Amid the downpour, 51 flights were also cancelled to and from Mumbai till 11 am. “It has been raining heavily since night. More than 30 mm of rain has fallen in 6 hours.
