A major fire broke out at Bandra’s Garib Nagar slums in Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon during a demolition drive and engulfed around 300 hutments

A major fire broke out at Bandra’s Garib Nagar slum in Mumbai on Thursday afternoon during a demolition drive and engulfed around 300 hutments and injured four, including one fireman. AP

The fire broke out at around 4.20 pm when municipal officials were carrying out an anti-encroachment drive outside Bandra station. The fire was caused due to a series of cylinder blasts during a demolition drive. PTI

The fire was classified as level IV, the second highest level of severity, and 17 water tankers and 9 fire engines were pressed into service to douse the massive blaze. Officals managed to bring the fire under control only by late evening. Huge tufts of smokes could be seen billowing over Bandra station. PTI

At one point, the flames reached the first-floor ticket booking office on the south foot overbridge forcing railways to tempororily stop services. As a precaution against a stampede, security personnel were posted across the station to prevent large crowds from gathering. AP

This was not the first time that a fire has broken out in the densely populated area. In 2011, a major fire had broken out injuring nine people affecting over 3,000 people. AP
