The New York Police Department said that the suspect, drove down his truck south, just blocks from the 9/11 Memorial, on the path killing eight people with 11 other sustaining serious injuries. AP

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio called the attack an "act of terror" but authorities have not definitively linked the suspect who was detained afterward to Islamic State. The incident that took place in Manhattan, the most densely populated of New York City's 5 boroughs, has sent shocking waves across the country. Reuters

The suspect who was identified 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov from Uzbekistan stepped out of the vehicle, brandishing two apparent handguns, before being shot in the abdomen by a police officer. A paintball gun and pellet gun were recovered at the scene. Reuters
