Liu’s friends and family members bade him farewell in a private ceremony in North East China’s Shenyang city. His wife prepared his ashes for burial at sea off the coast of Dalian in northeastern China’s Liaoning Province. AP

Liu was granted medical parole in June after receiving his diagnosis in prison, but China did not let him seek treatment abroad despite his wishes and international pressure. AP

Liu’s widow, Liu Xia,is said to be suffering from depression after spending years under house arrest and heavy surveillance. She was however, allowed ro visit her husband in hospital an prepare for his cremation. AP
