The protesters, who included women, were demanding the construction of Satluj-Yamuna (SYL) canal. PTI
As the gathering approached near Parliament from Sansad Marg around 1.45 pm, police personnel rushed and erected the barricades on the road in front of Parliament Annexe. PTI

After protesters reached Parliament street, the police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the crowd. PTI
Punjab and Haryana have been at loggerheads over the SYL Canal issue. The Supreme Court had terminated 2004 Punjab government order stopping water for neighboring states. PTI

Former Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal had asserted that Punjab "does not have a single drop of water to spare" for any other state. PTI
