India celebrates Chhath Puja: Devotees flock to Ganga, Yamuna on third day of festival

The four-day festival is observed mainly by the people from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh or Poorvanchalis, a sizable number of whom is settled in Delhi. PTI

Elaborate arrangements were made by the Delhi government and civic bodies for lakhs of devotees who throng the ghats of the Yamuna river and other water bodies for Chhath Puja. PTI

On the third day, the devotees stand in water and offer ‘arghya’ to the setting sun. On the final day of the puja, they converge at the river bank before sunrise and offer ‘arghya’ to the rising sun. PTI

The Delhi government had announced a public holiday on the occasion of Chhath Puja on 26 October, the third day of the festival. All the establishments, including offices and schools of the north, south and east Delhi municipal corporations were closed on Thursday. PTI

The West Bengal administration made elaborate arrangements to ensure safety of devotees along Ganga ghats on this occasion. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to her Twitter account to wish her followers “Happy Chhath Puja”. PTI
