French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy passed away on 12 March 2018 aged 91. The black sheath outfit he made for Audrey Hepburn to wear in Breakfast at Tiffany's opening scene is perhaps the most famous 'little black dress' of all time.
Givenchy's look for Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's perfectly reflects his brand of chic, restrained elegance.
Their collaboration reportedly began when Hepburn approached Givenchy to design her costumes for her post-Paris-makeover look in Sabrina.
Apparently, Cristóbal Balenciaga was the first choice for Sabrina, but the designer was thought to be too busy with his upcoming collection. So was Givenchy, but he was charmed by Hepburn and decided to take on the project.
The Givenchy-Hepburn collaboration led to some distinctive looks in Funny Face, especially the dreamy wedding dress.
The narrow-collared suits and slim woollen dresses Givenchy designed for Audrey Hepburn to wear in How to Steal a Million emphasised their stature as style icons.
Givenchy and Hepburn also enjoyed a deep relationship outside of films — they were friends for more than 40 years, from 1953 when they met while working on Sabrina, and ending with the actress' death in 1993.
