Loung Ung (centre) is the real-life inspiration behind Jolie's film.

First They Killed My Father is based on the Pol Pot regime, the forced evacuations from Phnom Penh, the journey to the brutal labour camps in the country’s northwest, and, for Ung, the conscription of children as soldiers into the ranks of the Revolutionary Army of Kampuchea. Image from AP.

The movie sparked off massive controversy recently after Jolie spoke about the 'casting game' that was played in order to select the protagonist of the movie. Image from AP.
