Ranbir Kapoor's debut may have been Saawariya and he may have done Bachna Ae Haseeno a year later, but the film that first earned him praise as an actor was Wake Up Sid, where he starred with Konkona Sen Sharma. He played a lost college student who finally finds both direction in terms of his career and his life. Image from Facebook/@WakeUpSidTheOfficial

He played a character with shades of grey in Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar. Kapoor's acting chops allowed him to show the rise and ultimate destruction of Janardhan Jhakar, an aspiring musician and singer. Kapoor went on to sign Anurag Basu's Barfi, a bitter-sweet tale of love where he played a deaf-mute man. The most striking aspect of this character was his resilience; after suffering heartbreak, he was able to find love again,

Though the film did not perform well commercially, Kapoor's nuanced performance as Harpreet Singh Bedi in Rocket Singh earned him the praise of critics. He played an honest salesman who builds his own company to show that bribery is not necessary to build a successful business. Youtube screengrab

But perhaps the role that Ranbir Kapoor is most associated with is Kabir "Bunny" Thapar from Ayan Mukerji's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. His character was of a charming man with a passion for travel, who finally falls in love with a former classmate, played by Deepika Padukone. Image from Facebook/@YehjawaaniHaiDeewani

Kapoor collaborated with Imtiaz Ali for a second time for Tamasha, where he played Ved, a happy-go-lucky man whose spirit is killed by his engineering job. After a psychotic break and introspection, he goes back to being free-spirited. Image from Facebook/@TamashaOfficial
