Mumbaikars woke up to heavy rainfall this morning as the city continued to face incessant rains since Tuesday. But post 11.00 am, the rainfall in most parts of the city reduced dramatically, with most areas of South-Central Mumbai and Thane experiencing no rain for now. [caption id=“attachment_981871” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] The MeT department had warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 72 hours. PTI[/caption] The BMC’s disaster management cell had on Tuesday issued an advisory asking people not to step out of their houses today unless absolutely necessary. But Mumbaikars, determined as they are, continued with their daily routine. Commuters travelling in South-Central Mumbai have said that areas of Dadar West, Lower Parel and Matunga are experiencing a little flooding, but no major traffic jams. Road traffic in suburban areas of Bandra, Andheri, Vile Parle, Ghatkopar and Mulund was largely smooth. The Mumbra bypass, a crucial link to traffic from Delhi-Ahmedabad-Mumbai and Agra-Nashik-Mumbai, was temporarily shut after it developed cracks and a crater. While on Tuesday railway lines were affected by the incessant rains, there was no major impact today. Trains along the Western line were running 10 minutes late, while Central and Harbour line were operating about a half hour behind schedule. On Tuesday evening, the meteorological department had warned that Maharashtra and coastal Konkan will face heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 72 hours. [embedalsosee] Twitter was abuzz with updates and images from commuters, providing key information on which roads had traffic snarl. #MumbaiTrains, #MumbaiRoads and #MumbaiRains were among the popular hashtags on the microblogging service. Most of the private schools in the city and suburbs as well as the adjoining Thane district had declared a holiday in advance due to the heavy rain. All municipal schools in the city have officially been declared closed.
