Bad news for Mumbai’s citizens. India’s city of dreams is the worst place on earth for tourists, according to a TripAdvisor survey. The top city for overall experience is Japan’s capital Tokyo, but Mumbai which is often seen as India’s most cosmopolitan city is ranked last according to the same criterion. According to a press statement from TripAdvisor, the Second annual Cities Survey revealed how travelers view key tourist cities around the world and was based on answers compiled from over 54,000 responses. The users who were part of the survey were those who have written TripAdvisor reviews for featured cities around the world. Tokyo was the best overall experience. It was also on top for helpfulness of locals, taxi service, local public transportation, and cleanliness of streets. Tokyo received high marks across the board, as it ranked among the top 10 in 13 of 16 categories in the survey. [caption id=“attachment_1539157” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]

It was also the lowest ranked when it came to “Ease of getting around”, cleanliness of streets. Mumbai was also third lowest in when it came to attractions and family friendliness. Cleanliness of streets and ease of getting around are categories where it is not surprising to see receive low marks. Even without dreaded monsoons, Mumbai’s streets are among the worst in the country and it’s common to find garbage strewn across the roads. Where getting around is concerned, while the average Mumbaikar might have attained superhuman strength to jump in and out of a local train with ease, tourists probably struggle to even figure out the local train system. And the roads with massive traffics jams aren’t another story. For Mumbai, the rankings will definitely come as a rude shock, given that the city has prided itself on being one of the most friendly and convenient city in the country. What will perhaps add insult to injury is that rival city Delhi, has managed to escape from joining any of the bottom ranks. Of course, Mumbai can derive some solace in the fact that Delhi isn’t on any of the top categories either, but that will be cold comfort.
