The five accused in the gangrape of a photojournalist were on Wednesday taken to the abandoned Shakti Mills compound, where they allegedly committed the crime, in order to recreate the crime. The investigators will recreate the crime scene to iron out discrepancies and contradictions in their testimonies of the five accused. On Tuesday, forensic teams from New Delhi and Gujarat collected DNA samples of the five accused and examined the crime scene for evidence. During interrogation, the accused admitted to having raped a ragpicker and a sex worker on separate occasions a few months back, said a crime branch official privy to the probe. “However, so far no complaints have been received as regards the above incidents. Also, there appears to be a molestation of a woman, who had come to the defunct mill with her partner,” the official said, adding that such incidents as could have occurred over the last six months were being verified. The officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that they have identified another key witness in the case. Meanwhile, National Commission for Women (NCW) Chairperson Mamta Sharma will on Thursday meet the survivor and also inquire with the police about the progress made so far in the case. “NCW has taken serious note of the incident. Its chairperson is scheduled to visit Mumbai on Thursday to speak to policemen involved in the investigation,” a police officer had said. NCW has formed a three-member panel to probe the case. Nirmala Prabhavalkar, who is heading the panel, had on Sunday visited the scene of the crime as part of her probe. The survivor, an intern with an English magazine, was allegedly raped by the five accused when she had gone on an assignment to the desolate Shakti Mills premises on 22 August accompanied by a male colleague. The colleague is a prime witness in the case. With PTI inputs
