Mumbai: Less than a week after a photojournalist was gangraped in the city, a 28-year-old woman was on Monday attacked by an unknown man with a sharp weapon while she was boarding a train at the suburban Goregaon station.
The woman was admitted to a hospital in Nallasopara, where she received seven stitches. A case was registered by the police.
"While I was boarding the train, he came and attacked me. He was in a white shirt. After the attack, I felt dizzy," the survivor said.
The attack comes barely a week after an American national was attacked on the suburban railway while travelling in a women's compartment. Late Sunday night, the Railway Police arrested the accused in that case from Masjid Bunder railway station.
"Accused Rajkumar Tiwari (31), a drug addict, was picked up from outside the Masjid Bunder railway station (Sunday) on suspicion during a combing operation. Upon interrogation, he confessed to the crime, following which he was placed under arrest last night," said B Shirsath, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Government Railway Police (GRP).
The GRP Crime Branch's Senior Police Inspector D Wadmare said, "After the accused was picked up, he was asked about the injuries he had suffered on his hands and head. Upon sustained interrogation, the accused admitted that he had robbed a woman in a moving train and had sustained injuries when he jumped out of the train. The accused claimed that he had handed over the phone to a woman who supplies him drugs, and in return he took Rs. 300. The lady has been detained."
Meanwhile, Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh on Monday sought to allay fears that the city was becoming unsafe for women. "Yes, this (gangrape) case is a very serious one.. but Mumbai is not unsafe," Singh said, during a press conference on Monday.
