Freak accident: Two glued to MRI machine after walking in with oxygen cylinder

In a bizarre accident, two employees of the Tata Memorial Hospital in Navi Mumbai suffered serious injuries when one of them walked into an MRI room with an oxygen cylinder. The metal in the cylinder activated the giant magnetic field of the machine pulling the two employees to the machine with great force. They were stuck to it for four agonising hours. AFP[/caption] Mumbai Mirror reported that “While the ward boy, Sunil Jadhav, 28, who brought the oxygen cylinder into the MRI room, fractured his elbow, the technician Swami Ramaiah, 35, who was sandwiched between Jadhav and the cylinder on the one side and the MRI machine on the other, suffered serious injuries to the lower part of his body, including a punctured urinary bladder and severe internal bleeding.” Both of them were rushed to the Bombay Hospital where a team of six doctors are treating them. Jadhav claims that he was completely unaware that metals were not supposed to be taken inside the room, despite warnings posted on the entrance to the room. While technicians in the hospital tried to deactivate the machine, only an engineer from General Electric was able to completely switch it off. A doctor who was an eyewitness to the horrific incident told Mumbai Mirror,“ACTREC engineers did everything they could to demagnetize the machine, but all in vain. It was only after a GE engineer detached the magnet from the machine that Jadhav and Ramaiah could be pulled out.” The hospital has also launched an internal inquiry to find out what actually went wrong.
