So if you missed your chance to eat at Cafe Samovar before it downed its shutters on 31 March, there may still be hope for you to catch a meal at the popular south Mumbai eatery. But it all comes down to whether the state government allows the city’s museum to give it a new home. The cafe, displaced from its original location at Jehangir Art Gallery to make way for more space to display art exhibitions, could move next door if the pleas made by those who ran the eatery are accepted by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. [caption id=“attachment_2183603” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] The cafe is presently shut. Solaris Images[/caption] According to a DNA report, the daughters of the owners of the cafe met with the Chief Minister on 31 March seeking to consider the eatery as a tourist destination and to highlight its importance as a cultural landmark. They also sought the government’s permission to either locate to the Jehangir art gallery terrace or the empty garden between the gallery and the Mumbai museum. They were accompanied by BJP spokesperson Shaina NC who also sought that the eatery be allowed to stay open. And it seems the government is now considering it. A Times of India report said that the state’s cultural affairs ministry has asked the management to come up with options. They will also consult with the revenue department in order to consider moving the restaurant to any of the suggested alternatives, the report said. Perhaps we’ve not see the last of the restaurant’s famed kheema samosas just yet. Fingers crossed!
The eatery that had to down its shutters on 31 March may just get a second life.
