Mumbai: Even as heavy rainfall continues to the lash the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today announced 50 percent cut in water supply to the commercial establishments such as malls, five star hotels, and factories among others.
However, the civic body did not increase the existing 20 percent water cut to the domestic consumers.
As on 16 July, the collective stock of water in the seven lakes has reached 1,11,193 million litres which was 8,80,007 million litres last year. On 2 July, the civic body announced the 20 percent water cut across the city citing less rainfall in the catchment areas of lakes in Thane. Civic body has announced the decision as an addition measure to use the existing water stock carefully.
“Ideally, the average water stock should have been 4,49,659 million litres as on today. Since the existing water stock will last till August end, we will have to cut 50 percent water supply to malls, five star hotels, factories and other commercial establishments. But, we are not making any increase in the existing 20 percent cut in water supply to the domestic consumers,” said Mohan Adtani, additional municipal commissioner in the standing committee meeting today.
He added that the water to swimming pools will be discontinued.
“We will stop the complete water supply to the swimming pools. Similarly, the water supply to the gardens will be stopped and we will ask them use the water from alternate sources,” he said.
