It is a rural constituency with an approximate literacy rate of 74.23%. In 2014, there were 1764388 voters of which 971956 were male and 792318 were female and 114 voters of the third gender. Meerut has an estimated Scheduled Caste population of 19.14% and a Scheduled Tribe population of 0.13%.

Rajendra Agarwal of BJP (Alliance: NDA) won in this seat defeating BSP. BJP polled 5,32,981 of the total of 11,13,484 votes polled. BJP won the seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.
