Most of you are probably used to seeing celebrities or politicians featuring in Independence Day videos paying tribute to the National Anthem. Two sisters - Simrit and Sonal Mann, known together as The String Theory, a band that plays the sitar, decided to do something different. They played the National Anthem on the sitar - an instrument that they have been learning since the age of 8. Not just that, the sisters also conceived of a video accompanying the National Anthem that features the common man - who are often forgotten and remain lost in the crowd. The video has been directed by Surya Balakrishnan and the music has been composed by Rahul Bhatt. Speaking to Firstpost, the musical duo said, “From childhood we have been hearing stories about the Partition and Independence from our grandfather. He was also in the army. This musical rendition of the National Anthem was our way of paying a tribute to the heroes who have laid down their lives so that our country and its citizens can enjoy independence today.” [caption id=“attachment_1035097” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Simrit and Sonal Mann - The String Theory talk about the National Anthem. The sisters, who have been training under Ustad Siraj Khan of the Mewati Gharana, said, “In India we realised that the listeners of classical music are a very mature crowd. So we thought - what better way to reach out to the young than the National Anthem?” Watch the video above where The String Theory talk about their rendition of the National Anthem and the Aam Aadmi video.
As India celebrates its 66th birthday, two sisters rendered the National Anthem in sitar and dedicated it to the common man. Firstpost spoke to the duo to find out what inspired them to play the National Anthem.
