Facebook runs a major part of so many (social) lives, but how exactly is Facebook run? How does the core of the world’s largest social network function? Where do the employees sit, where does Zuckerberg sit? Is it all fancy glass and wood or it trendy and colourful? Do they have a foosball table? So many questions! [caption id=“attachment_2435846” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] Mark Zuckerburg’s desk in a screengrab from the video.[/caption] Thankfully some of these were answered in the first live video taken at the Facebook headquarters in California by Mark Zuckerberg. The company’s CEO took us on a virtual tour of his office and it turned out to be quite unusual. In the video, Zuckerberg shows off the new office, which is huge, spacious and surprisingly open. The reason for the lack of walls and cabins is simple - Facebook wants to foster a ’transparent and open culture," just like the site. “The whole idea here is that by having an open floor plan where people work close to each other it facilitates people sharing and communicating about what they are doing which enables better collaboration which we think is the key to building services for our community,” says Zuckerberg in the video. Even the CEO himself doesn’t have a fancy office with his achievements posted on the walls, but a desk as simple as any regular office going professional. In fact had he not pointed out that the modest desk is his, one could almost mistake it for being that of any other employee. Here’s what we noticed on the desk of one of the youngest and richest CEOs of the world - an Apple MacBook, a stack of books, a work report he has been tracking, a wood cut Facebook logo, a satellite model that they are working on, a stuffed blue dinosaur, a Facebook tee and some artsy desk graffiti saying ‘Zuckerberg’ which makes for the only personalisation. We think that this simple, open set up looks nice and works effectively as in Zuckerburg’s own words, “everyone can see what everyone is working on.” Watch the full video here
