Reading Life of Pi is a surreal experience in itself. The story of Piscine ‘Pi’ Patel, who survives 227 days aboard a boat alongside a Bengal tiger, is fantastic and yet curiously believable. The tale which takes the reader through life in Pondicherry, the intricacies of faith, a shipwreck, and strange islands in the middle of the sea that turn out to be made of carnivorous algae.
And now, ten years after it won the Man Booker prize the book will be portrayed as a 3D movie by Oscar nominated director Ang Lee, of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Sense and Sensibility fame.
The first trailer for the movie which hit the Internet today, concentrates mainly on the storm that sinks the ship that Pi and Richard Parker were traveling on, and Lee has used CGI and 3D liberally.
Richard Parker has his fair share of screen time, and the flashes that show his interactions with Pi (portrayed by newcomer Suraj Sharma) look well shot and engaging. It’s difficult to tell as of now, but we are definitely interested to see more! The movie will be released in December.
