It has long been known that Orangutans are incredibly intelligent creatures, but a new experiment at the Jungle zoo in Miami has shown that they understand us even more than we thought. The zoo is using iPads in an effort to interact and communicate with the creatures, who are presently using an app to tell the zoo keepers what they would prefer to have for lunch! They can also identify body parts and different types of fruit. [caption id=“attachment_371393” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]
The Orangutans know how to recognize icons on the iPad[/caption]“They have all the intelligence they really need to communicate with us. What they dont have are developed vocal chords or voice boxes. So they have all the intelligence but not the equipment, This gives them a voice”, said Linda Jacobs, one of the zoo keepers. In the future the zoo hopes to introduce new apps that will allow visitors to the zoo to communicate with the Orangutans and perhaps take a greater interest in the conservation of great apes in the wild.
