Video: Bangalore woman chases down harasser, kicks him in the face

Bangalore resident Veena Ashiya Chindlur's video of how she had tackled a man who was harassing her while she was on her morning run has gone viral online. Chindlur originally put up the video on Facebook and now, mainstream media has picked up the story.

Chindlur wrote in her Facebook post, "I was eve teased this morning by a guy in a park where I run regularly! I chased him- hit him hard and filed an FIR. Police was extremely supportive. I am posting this video for women to know that change will happen only when we want it to happen!"

In the video, Chindlur is seen chasing the man (the video was being recorded by a friend), who is hiding his face. When he turns apologetic, she forces him to kneel on the ground and then kicks him hard in the face. The man then quickly runs off.

According to a Banglore Mirror report, while Chindlur chased the man, "her friend, who was working out along with her, immediately pulled out her phone to take pictures of the accused, but she ended up recording the entire chase. The snapshots were given to the police who responded promptly to their call and, within 40 minutes, traced the man loitering in the area and arrested him."

Chindlur also told the paper that not everyone was happy on social media that she had hit the man. She said, "The fact that women can react and hit back is just not acceptable in our society."

She also said, "Nobody came to help me and as I was standing in the park, I spotted a policeman. I narrated the incident to him and he immediately called the patrolling vehicle."

The report adds "that the accused has been identified as K R Suryaprakash, 30, a resident of Banashankari III Stage." According to the FIR filed, the accused made lewd gestures. A case has been registered under IPC section 354 (A) and section 509.

The incident is a reminder that harassment continues to be a major problem in India and that very often women need to resort to such strong retaliation. In a previous incident, women in Mumbai's Bandra station had beaten up two molesters, who were later arrested by the police.
