We’ve all come across bigoted, racist or sexist people in our lives; people who don’t blink twice before putting a label on unfamiliar people and cultures, people who just see the world in stereotypes and refuse to understand, appreciate and tolerate those dissimilar to them. It’s really difficult to get along with those narrow-minded people, who keep obsessing over some people from a minority community, or over that girl who doesn’t wear the “right” clothes. Them Boxer Shorts, a comedy channel
on YouTube has come up with a brilliant video showing what we see everyday in our real lives. Everybody Loves a Stereotype, the recently released comedy sketch by the channel, takes a satirical look at existing stereotypes in the Indian society and also makes you look under your own collar. Are we fuelling those stereotypes too? Are we intolerant too? The video, shot in a sitcom-style (full with recorded laughter as well), explores a situation which might be familiar to most young people, who have faced racial and religious profiling by landlords while hunting for flats in a new city. The video shows two men going through a bigoted landlord-hell, (well actually, landlady in this case) who keeps rejecting their selections for a third roommate based on their religion, region, gender and even sexual orientation. After rejecting countless contenders for the third roommate, the landlady selects one herself, a ‘well-mannered’ boy. The new guy even brings beers for his two new roommates, as a token of thanks. All sorted, right? Not quite so. Soon the two friends, both very liberal and tolerant people who cringe at their landlady’s biases, discover that the new guy is a ‘Delhi-ite’, and that’s where their tolerance ends. The video also features a cameo from Biswa, the other half of Pretentious Movie Reviews. Watch the brilliant and thought-provoking video below and figure out where your tolerance ends and biases begin.
