The UK advertising watchdog, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned two advertisements by L’Oreal because the images used in the ads were photoshopped to an extent that they were misleading.

Says the BBC: “Cosmetic adverts featuring airbrushed images of actress Julia Roberts and model Christy Turlington have been banned by the advertising watchdog. Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson complained that the L'Oreal adverts were "not representative of the results the products could achieve".

Cosmetic adverts featuring airbrushed images of actress Julia Roberts and model Christy Turlington have been banned by the advertising watchdog.

"If advertisers go too far in using airbrushing and other post-production techniques to alter the appearance of models and it's likely to mislead people, then that's wrong and we'll stop the ads," said Guy Parker, chief executive of the ASA, speaking to BBC.

It’s not that the ASA has banned photoshopping in toto, it’s the context that they have taken objection to.

If an image like the one used in the ad above were photoshopped, for example, where the enhancement would not unfairly influence a purchase, there would be no objection.

In a category such as cosmetics, the danger of consumers believing that the photoshopped image that they see in the ad is what the usage of the cosmetic will lead to is what the ASA has ruled in guarding against.

If an image like the one used in the ad on the left were photoshopped, for example, where the enhancement would not unfairly influence a purchase, there would be no objection.

And God knows that this image could have gained from some retouching!
