Remember that iconic scene in Goldfinger when James Bond, tied to a board with a laser about to cut him in half, says, “Do you expect me to talk?”
Imagine if you suddenly saw Stephen Hawking appear on screen and say, “No, Mr Bond, I expect you to disappear into the black hole.”
As it turns out, even Stephen Hawking does not think this is an absurd idea. When asked what his ideal movie role would be, Hawking, according to this Wired report , said, “My ideal role would be a baddie in a James Bond film. I think the wheelchair and the computer voice would fit the part.”
And can we say, Hawking just gave the film industry an excellent idea. Who would not go to watch a James Bond film with Stephen Hawking as the villain?
Here are some reasons why we think Stephen Hawking would make the perfect Bond villain:
1. Hawking, the ultimate evil scientist: In one Sherlock Holmes novel, Watson looks at the detective in admiration and fear, wondering how terrible it would’ve been if Holmes chose to be a criminal instead of a detective.
Similarly, the only requirement to turn Stephen Hawking into a Bond villain would have been to make him an evil scientist. If Hawking used his scientific genius for evil purposes, we’re pretty sure he would be one of the best villains the world has ever seen. Hawking could thuse very easily play the part of a villain smarter than Dr No or Goldfinger. Moreover, with Hawking’s mental prowess, Bond would have to face some of the deadlieast deathtraps ever invented.
2. That robotic voice and the wheelchair: You really cannot be damned to hell for making fun of a disability if the disabled person himself makes fun of it. And let’s admit it. Hawking’s robotic voice and the slowly moving wheelchair do fit the stereotypical villain trope. We can almost hear him intone “mwa.ha.ha.ha.ha.”
3. Bond villains and disability: If there is a common pattern in most of the Bond villains, it’s that they suffer some form of disability. We’re not sure about the political correctness of this, but be the reason, whether it is Dr No with the metallic hands, Le Chiffre whose tearducts release blood instead of tears, Alec Trevelyan with his half-burnt face, Jaws with his metallic teeth or Raoul Silva with the face deformed by acid, many Bond villains have made disability synonymous with sinisterness. So Hawking would easily fit the bill… and be the best of the lot, we’re willing to bet!
