Scotland: Dog abandoned on railway station with suitcase of belongings

Animal cruelty exists in many shapes and forms. For some owners, when handling a pet becomes too much, they simply choose to abandon the animal.  In Scotland, the story of Kai, a 2-3 year old crossbreed male Chinese Shar-Pei dog has caught worldwide attention after he was found abandoned and tied up in a railway station.

Kai's story has gone viral all over and has been covered by CNN, and BuzzFeed to name a few. The dog  was found by the Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty against Animals (SPCA) at a railway station along with a suitcase.

According to the Scottish SPCA, which posted about the news on their website, the animal was found on 2 January and the SPCA discovered that he was microchipped which helped them get the dog's name.

Inspector Stewart Taylor is quoted by the SPCA website as saying, "We contacted the owner registered to the microchip, who stated they had sold Kai on Gumtree in 2013. Unfortunately they could not tell us the address of the person who bought him. This case highlights the potential consequences of selling an animal online as it often leads to the impulse buying of pets that people know very little about."

Kai was left on the station with a suitcase full of his belongings which included food, his food bowl, a pillow and toy. The SPCA said that Kai "is a lovely dog with a nice nature" and that they "will look after him" until they find him a new home.

According to Taylor even though the latest owners left Kai with his belongings, this still constitutes as animal cruelty and they were trying to identify them. It's unlikely that the people who abandoned him will come forward as this act constitutes an offence in Scotland and those who do so can be banned from keeping pets in the future.

Hopefully Kai's ordeal is over, and he will find a loving, new forever home!
